Alberta Arts District – Alberta Neighborhood
The Alberta Neighborhood is know as the Alberta Arts District. Located in NE Portland it has become a local hot spot boasting a multi-cultural population and a small business haven. Offering unique hangouts and events like the well known “Last Thursday” this area has really made a name for itself. Noted as one of Portland’s most lively art districts it seemed nature that “Last Thursday” was born. Last Thursday is obviously on the last Thursday of the month and the streets line with vendors dealing arts and crafts. Food everywhere. All the new Art fills up the gallaries. Bicyclists flock to the area to take advantage of the most bike friendly neighborhood. The nonprofit Community Cycling Center is located at NE 17th & Alberta. This a good place to see boutiques featuring international clothing, delicious restaurants, coffee houses, art gallaries and a trendy atmosphere. The area artichture is a mix of craftsman bungalos, traditional four square homes, and some new contruction replicas. Tons of charm.
Where is it?
Alberta Arts is located between NE 15th and NE 33rd on Alberta Street. This is the heart of the Concordia, Alameda and King neighborhoods.
Beaverton
Beaverton got it’s name due to its proximity to a large body of water caused from beaver dams. Layered with forests, rivers, wetland, hills and manicured streets this City has almost 100 parks boasting a near 1,000 acres. Which include hiking trails and bike paths. It is said that there is a park located within a mile of every Beaverton home. There is an an abundance of businesses and industry which attracts plenty of hotels, restaurants, malls, swimming pools, golf courses, rec centers and family events including the well known Farmer’s Market.
Clackamas
About 5,000 people live in the city of Clackamas. Happy Valley is Adjacent to Clackamas and is considered part of the city. Clackamas is also the home of the Town Center, The Pomenade, and Camp Withycombe, a military base and plenty of stores. Happy Valley boasts hillside homes, tastefully constructed storefronts, and amazing custom built homes & neighborhoods.
Forest Heights
Positioned on the West Slope of the West Hills, Forest Heights is a luxurious housing development in Portland. Over 600 acres of hills, steep winding roads, running paths, community parks, and an over-sized pond Forest Heights has some amazing views. Considered one of Portland’s most desirable neighborhoods Forest Heights is truly an oasis providing easy access to nature and enough recreational space for people to enjoy that nature. Parks include: Forest Heights Park and Mill Pond Park. Almost 1/3 of Forest Heights is set aside for common green space to preserve the beauty of this area. Architectural styles range from classic Northwest, colonial, Mediterranean, and Custom built homes.
Where is it?
Nestled in NW Portland Hills, west of Skyline and North of Cornell. Just head North on Miller from Burnside / Barnes Rd.
Gresham
Gresham is located just east of Portland. Gresham has a hometown fell and provides a downtown experience as well. Gresham’s unique appeal arrives from the tree lined streets, a variety of restaurants, and specialty shops. 15 minutes away is the Columbia River Gorge, Gresham offers amazing views of the river and local waterfalls. Also boasting miles of hiking and biking trails, light rail and golf courses. Gresham was originally established as a Campground. Early Pioneers would stop for the night and camp, sleep and get ready to make a new life in Portland. The City was named after Postmaster General and American Civil War General Walter Quinton Gresham in 1905. Gresham is now the 4th largest City in Oregon.
Hawthorne District
The Hawthorne District is also called the “Sunnyside District” and is best known for a laid back culture and is been compared to the San Francisco’s famed “Haight Street”. This Southeast District is filled with funky coffee shops, local restaurants, second hand clothing stores, boutiques, consignment and vintage shops. The Hawthorne District is one of Portland’s Favorite places for the night life. Located in SE Portland, it’s between 34th Ave and 38th Ave. Very close to the Laurelhurst Park and Mt. Tabor Park this area is a mix of urban and park like settings.
Lake Oswego
Lake Oswego is known for exceptional schools and takes pride in it’s Public School education system. Nine elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools producing over 300 instructors for 7,000 students. Lake Oswego also has 24 parks, one amphitheater, a few community centers, a public golf course, tennis courts, soccer fields and running paths.To no surprise Lake Oswego is one of the most expensive neighborhoods, especially the homes on Oswego Lake. Comprising of 19 neighborhood associations Lake Oswego has notable areas like First Addition, West Lake, Lake Grove, South Shore, North Shore, Barrington Heights and Mountain Park.
Laurelhurst
The Laurelhurst neighborhood is a serene setting filled with tree lined streets and unique homes. Laurelhurst is a collection of homes in Southeast Portland bordered by the Center, Hollywood, Kerns, Sullivan’s Gulch and Sunnyside neighborhoods. A favorite here is the admired Laurelhurst Park. This historic park is a popular place to walk, jog, or have a picnic. Once owned by a prominent Portlander named William S. Ladd which used the land to farm. Ladd died in 1893 and the land transitioned to residential neighborhoods. Near by farms were acquired and incorporated by “The Laurelhurst Company” which was a development organization which hired the famed architectural firm of the Olmstead Brothers to design the modern, upper class neighborhood. Laurelhurst included fully paved streets (rare at this time), including luxurious parking spaces, wide side walks, and cute street lamps. Over 2000 trees were planted.
Historic Mississippi District, Boise and Piedmont Neighborhoods
The Historic Mississippi District is also part of the Boise and Piedmont Areas. These neighborhoods offer unique culture and nearly every business is locally owned and operated. These area are located in North Portland and is one of the hippest places to shop, dine, and go out. Recently revived Mississippi Avenue evolved from urban roots and now has a boutique flair with growing options to establish itself as one of the most diverse and unique shopping hot spots in Portland.
Montavilla Neighborhood
The Historic Motavilla Neighborhood dates back almost 110 years. Located in Southeast Portland, this area is just minutes away from Mt. Tabor and the Hawthorne District. Large, neat, and modest homes with well kept yards. Remaining as one of Portland’s affordable neighborhoods full of charm and excitement.
Mt. Tabor
Also the name of an extinct volcanic cinder cone. Mt. Tabor is located between SE 49th Ave and SE 76th Ave. The Hawthorne is close by and offers great shopping and eateries. A well desired Portland Suburb. Mt. Tabor was named by Plympton Kelly, son of an Oregon City pioneer resident.
Oregon City
Established in 1829, Oregon City was the first incorporated city west of the Mississippi by Dr. John McLoughlin as a lumber mill. Oregon City’s most notable attraction is Willamette Falls. The largest waterfall in the Pacific Northwest. Also the 18th Largest in the world (by volume of water). Historic industries included fishing and lumber sales. Oregon City has tons of parks, a farmer’s market and a array of community activities. Oregon City is 20 minutes South of Portland off I-205. South of the Clackamas River and Southeast of the Willamette River.
Parkrose Neighborhood
The Parkrose neighborhood has a little bit of everything. Offering an excellent independent school district, large commercial district, and dining / entertainment districts. The Parkrose Neighborhood began as timber farmland and flourished for the past 50 plus years offering an appealing and modest residential alternative to the inner Eastside. Located in East Portland and bordered by the Sumner, Argay, and Parkrose Heights neighborhoods the Parkrose are is only a short distance from Portland International Airport.
The Pearl District
Coined “The Pearl District” over 10 years ago by a local Art Gallary owner to reflect the pearls (his art) in the crusty old buildings, this area has undergone significant development and is now full of contemporary and trendy Condos. Unmatched in the Northwest for entertainment, parks, resaurants, theatre, and public transportation. Some of these condos are in buildings like: The North Park Lofts, Elizabeth Lofts, The Avenue Lofts, The Edge, The Gregory, Marshall Wells Lofts, Pearl Lofts, Street Car Lofts, 937 Glisan, The Casey, The Encore, The Henry, The Lexis, and the Pinnacle. Don’t forget to take a ride on the Portland Streetcar that runs right through The Pearl District.
Sandy
Sandy is nearly 25 miles east of Portland and just off HWY 26 in Clackamas County. Eight minutes from Gresham and 30 minutes Mt. Hood. Sandy has just over 3,000 residents and is surrounded by lush forests and close to the Sandy River. Full of extraordinary scenic views, and offering a perfect place for mountain biking, fishing snowmobiling and other recreational activities. Sandy was incorporated as a city in 1913.
Sellwood and Moreland Neighborhoods
Right next to the Willamette River in Southeast Portland, Sellwood is full of locally owned businesses, historic homes and bordered by Moreland neighborhoods. This area is known as family friendly and have many architectural styles of homes. Many trees dot the side walks and parks make this area desirable. Known for antique shops, boutiques and coffee houses this area is also know to be trendy too. The Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is over 140 acres of wetlands dedicated to the preservation of some of the area’s wildlife.
South Waterfront
Oregon’s 1st Green Neighborhood. The South Waterfront is presently the largest green development in the country and has innovative energy saving and water conservation techniques like LEED certified building a bios wale filtration to support the entire neighborhood and minimizes the impact on the environment. The South Waterfront is also considered Salmon Safe. These are just some of the eco friendly practices offered to help keep Portland Green. Accessible by the Portland Streetcar and aerial Tram residents have no lack of transportation. The South Waterfront is Portland’s newest neighborhood that provides convenient downtown urban living in a natural setting on the Willamette River.
St. Johns
Located in North Portland, this charming and small town has a vintage feel. On a peninsula created by the union of the Willamette River and the Columbia River. The North Portland Railroad cuts to the Southeast and the famed Cathedral Park Neighborhood is to the Southwest. Local Landmarks include the St. Johns Bridge which has been compared to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge but there is no historic connection. Don’t forget to attend the annual St. Johns Blues Festival.
West Linn
Known as the City of Hills, Trees, and Rivers, West Linn boasts Tualatin and Willamette Rivers, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, and the Cascades. West Linn offers many unique attractions, including Marylhurst University and Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals. A perfect place for fishing, boating, bird watching and hiking. Filled with historic places fill the area including the nation’s first multi-lift navigation locks used to allow boats to move between thee upper and lower river. The Willamette Falls Locks were built in the 1870’s and are maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. West Linn is 12 miles south of Portland near Oregon City.
