Concordia is a neighborhood in NE Portland. It’s bordered by the Alberta Arts and Wilshire neighborhoods to the south, Vernon to the west, Cully West to it’s east, and PDX and Heron Meadows to the north. Most of Concordia is dominated by Concordia University but after that most the area is residential but there are still plenty of businesses and great things to see and do.

Overview
The Concordia neighborhood is named for Concordia University, a Lutheran liberal arts school, which dominates the center of the area. The neighborhood even has its own volunteer-run newspaper which is an extension of the neighborhood association’s website. They always welcome comments and feedback. Overall, the neighborhood is creative and fun. Newer residents are moving in and man of the homes have been revitalized and restored to their former glory adding an extra bit of charm. This new growth has added a bit of gentrification to the area and it’s been greeted with mixed results.
Throughout the community there are many businesses although the largest of them tend to be located on the southern end along NE Killingsworth. Certainly the largest and most well-known of these is the McMenamin’s Kennedy School. The first time I went there was a bit like my first time to Powell’s City of Books. The place was so huge I felt like I needed a map to find my way around, but thankfully the staff (and conveniently placed directional signs) got me to the right place.
As far as commuting goes, there aren’t any freeways within the immediate vicinity, however there are still plenty of major roads. Lombard to the north, Killingsworth to the south, and 42nd to the east. Public transit is readily available in most of the neighborhood by using either the 9-Broadway/Powell, 72-Killingsworth/82nd, 73-NE 33rd Ave or 75-Lombard/39th. There’s hardly a home anywhere here that’s more than 2 blocks from any of these lines and thankfully all of them run very regularly.
Parks
Alberta Park – Resting at the edge of the Concordia neighborhood is Alberta Park. This 16 acre park includes basketball courts, disabled access restroom, dog off-leash area, picnic tables and playground for family events, soccer field, softball field, and tennis court.
Faubion SUN Community School – Here you’ll find all sorts of family safe activities all year round and at affordable prices, if not free.
Fernhill Park – This is one of the largest parks in Portland, comprised of over 26 acres of trees, greenspace and sports areas. The park features a playground, dog park, and several sports fields. These include: a baseball field, volleyball court, softball field, soccer field, tennis court, track, and horseshoe pit, all of which are reserveable for events by calling Portland Parks and Recreation at 503-823-2525.
Kennedy Community Garden – Located just outside the Kennedy School is this great community garden. Keeping it healthy and keeping it local, now that’s Portland.
