Overview
Walking along N Mississippi Ave will provide anyone plenty of stuff to see and do. The street is lined with an array of storefronts and restaurants ranging from the eclectic Paxton Gate and local chiropractor to breakfast-hotspot Gravy and Sunlan Lighting, fulfilling every lighting need you never knew you had. Basically, if you like the Pearl District, minus higher rents, and without all that extra posh then Boise’s right for you, and even more so if you’re a foodie
The neighborhood is bound by N Fremont, NE MLK, N Alberta, and I-5. Most people living here tend to use MLK or I-5 to get around but public transit is also readily throughout and the MAX is only a few blocks west on Interstate Ave. If you’re walking to the MAX though don’t forget about the Failing St pedestrian bridge over I-5 instead of trying to cross the busy intersections at N Alberta or N Skidmore.
Some notable businesses to point out are:
Amnesia Brewing – Kevin King and his wife Kristina started this local brewhouse about 7 years ago. Since then they’ve been using the finest ingredients and employing techniques that may take longer but keep regulars and new comers discovering and rediscovering an unfound passion for beer. AmnesiaBrewing
Miss Delta – Southern cooking at it’s finest, and inexpensive too. Collared greens, fried okra, hearty gravy, chicken fried steak, it’s all here. Don’t forget the ice cold lemonade. Miss Delta
Mississippi Studios – Available for both private events and venue space, the space is a great alternative for the non-traditional wedding or as debut space for up and coming performersMississippi Studios
Pistils Nursery – A country escape in the heart of Boise. Inside is a great collection of smaller household sized plants, though in the back is a collection of larger plants and gardening supplies. Don’t forget to pet the chickens!Pistils Nursery
Parks
Boise-Eliot Community Garden – This is one of the most active community gardens in NE
DeNorval Unthank Park – Named for Dr. DeNorval Unthank. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Kansas City, and received his medical degree from Howard University in Washington, DC. He moved to Portland in 1929 to start his own practice. He worked at Good Samaritan, Providence, St Vincent, and Emanuel Hospitals. The park was named in his honor after his work in bringing down racial barriers in 1969. The park includes a baseball field, basketball court, disabled access restroom, picnic tables, playground, and soccer field.
