Overview

The Alberta Arts neighborhood has transformed much over the years. The area was once a bit of a slum and avoided my many crowds. Now the neighborhood can probably be described best as fashionable and fun. At the moment it’s caught is the midst of gentrification, as new businesses move in, older homes are being remodeled and property values are on the rise, forcing out long-time residents. Homes express a unique artsy style and are well suited to the neighborhood’s name.

The neighborhood is centered around Alberta St and has many newly built retail stores, restaurants and galleries. Sitting alongside these are many older businesses that offer an array of services. Scattered throughout the neighborhood are the pivotal Portland coffee shops and despite the number of coffee shops you won’t find a Starbucks. It just wouldn’t fit into Alberta’s unconventional style.

The name “Alberta Arts” may seem a bit of an understatement when taking into consideration the number of art galleries along the street. Step into any shop or restaurant though and you’ll soon realize that even these storefronts contain their own galleries with a rotating list of local artist all eager for an chance to display their work.

Getting most anywhere from Alberta Arts is easy. There are numerous major roads linging the neighborhood and multiple Trimet bus lines. Even biking is easy with flat, wide streets and lots of bike lock-ups available on nearly every block.

Events

Alberta Arts has its own event called Last Thursday. Like the Pearl District’s First Thursday, Last Thursday is like a street fair and gallery hopping all in one event. It runs all summer long and other months weather permitting.
