Overview
The Willamette Heights neighborhood originally began back in the 1890s but saw very little growth until the construction of a street bridge across the since-drained Balch Gulch which separates it from the eastern half of NW Portland. Soon afterward homes began appearing all over the Willamette Heights area, many of which were built by the developer Russell and Blythe. The two hired Emil Schacht to design “modern” craftsman and colonial style homes. Their goal was to impress the mass of people who would be attending the Lewis and Clark Exposition that was to be built in the low-lying area directly below the “Heights”. Their plans were far surpassed, as nearly 3 million attendees passed through the Exposition’s turnstyles, and thousands of them trekked up to the Heights to see the display of “modern” houses. By 1908, all the lots had been sold, most with new homes already built on them and all without a single advertisement
Very little of the area has changed since its construction when compared to the rest of downtown Portland. There are more families and less condos and urban crawl. The only exception to that would be the area around NW Thurman and NW Vaughn between NW 26th and NW 28th. This corner of Willamette Heights is quite similar to Nob Hill/23rd with its numerous shops and restaurants.
Some critically acclaimed eateries include Meriwether’s, Pata Negra, St. Honoré, and Besaw’s. Meriwether’s Restaurant prepares top-notch cuisine and excellent cocktails with fresh northwest ingredients. Casual dress and tasty Spanish tapas distinguish Pata Negra. St. Honoré is an extremely popular French bakery that handmakes their delicious pastries, breads, and lunch fare and Besaw’s Café on NW Savier cooks up hearty America comfort food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Being on the western slope overlooking Portland offers many great views and many of these homes take advantage of that in their design, including large windows, high ceilings, skylights, etc.
Owning a car is a must if you’re going to live in Willamette Heights. Trimet can reach some of the eastern corner of the neighborhood but after that it either walk for a while or hail a cab.
