Overview
The Westover neighborhood is rich with elegant homes and breathtaking views of Mt. Hood, downtown Portland and the surrounding neighborhoods. Residents here have ready access to the Nob Hill neighborhood, Jeld-Wen Field, Forest Park and Washington Park and all of downtown Portland.
The area was originally called “Scotch Nubbin” and was one of several areas of great interest after the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition. Within six months of the fair closing the buildings and much of the land was purchased by Lafayette Pence, a land speculator from Colorado who intended to clear the land, fill in the long-since-drained Guild’s Lake, and redevelop the area for residential use. Part of his plan included terracing the steep hillside.
Pence’s plans fell through for various reasons and the project was continued by a group of investors from Seattle in 1909. These entrepreneurs used water to scrape away the hillside into manageable terraces and by 1920 residents had begun moving into the newly formed Westover Terraces. Since then the neighborhood has grown to include about 600 homes.
There are many walking guides in the neighborhood and the Walking Tour to Pittock Mansion begins in Northwest Portland in Nob Hill and winds it’s way through Westover and up some of the longest stairs in Portland. Once at the Pittock Mansion getting home is a breeze no matter where home may be since it’s quite literally all downhill from Pittock.
