The NW Industrial district is located along the Willamette and borders the Pearl District, Nob Hill, Willbridge and Willamette Heights neighborhoods. The area is primarily industrial and most the land has been designated the Guild’s Lake Industrial Sanctuary, to preserve the land for long-term industrial use and to resist pressure for residential development.

Overview
The Industrial District in NW Portland hasn’t changed much since it’s creation before the turn of the century. It’s one of the few remaining large urban industrial districts in the United States and one of the premier heavy industrial districts in the Pacific Northwest.
Despite this long industrial tradition it was briefly transformed from industrial swampland for the 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition. The Exposition ran for a mere four months but attracted over 1.6 million visitors and featured exhibits from 21 countries. Portland’s population before the fair was about 160,000 but swelled to 270,000 during the following few years and that spurt has been attributed to the fair. After the fair, the buildings in the area were destroyed and the district once again returned to the industrial area we know it as today.
There are many businesses in the neighborhood but nothing that may be terribly useful for the standard consumer. The largest restaurant in the NW Industrial district is Mactarnahan’s Taproom at the intersection of NW 31st and NW Industrial St. The Taproom features as variety of award-winning craft beers and fine brewhouse cuisine. For special events, there is a fireside dining room, outdoor seating, and plenty of banquet space.
Parks
No standard park space to be found in NW Industrial area but just on the other side of NW St. Helens Rd you’ll find the appropriately named Forest Park which runs from NW 29th Ave and Upshur St to Newberry Rd.

Vibe
Just as it sounds, the NW Industrial District is, well, industrial. Everywhere you look there are warehouses, wholesale suppliers, and industrial buildings. While there are lots of potential jobs out here most housing in the area is found in the southeast corner along NW Front Ave and south of NW Nicolai. Families in this corner of NW Industrial are very similar to those in the Pearl and may even consider themselves residents of the Pearl District, especially considering how close it is.
Like any neighborhood there are always great deals to be found if you know what to look for. If you are interested in buying a home in NW Industrial check out the list below for current listings or contact me directly if you’re looking to sell.
